Black Panther 2’s working title has been revealed as “Summer Break.” The Black Panther sequel has been the source of much speculation ever since the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, who starred as T’Challa in four Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, including his own solo film in 2018. At the time, Black Panther was one of the highest-grossing superhero movie of all time, and Boseman was expected back for a sequel. But in August 2020, the shocking news came that Boseman had passed away after a four-year battle with colon cancer. A few months later, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced that Black Panther 2 would not recast Boseman, in order to honor his legacy. Other than this, very little is known about the upcoming sequel.
Several Phase 4 Marvel films aside from Black Panther 2 are currently in the works and have received working titles. These include Thor: Love and Thunder, which is currently filming under the working title “The Big Salad.” Others are Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is working under “Hot Christmas,” and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which is reportedly going by “GOAT Rodeo.”
Now, in a listing put out by Production Weekly, Black Panther 2’s working title, “Summer Break,” has been revealed. This is likely unrelated to the movie’s final title and will be used for production purposes only. However, it is an exciting sign things are moving forward as Black Panther 2 is set to begin filming later this year.
Most of the time, working titles are chosen as random fun names to avoid attracting too much attention when applying for permits, hiring cast and crew, and accomplishing other tasks behind the scenes. However, in the case of MCU movies, their working titles sometimes reveal hints regarding the film’s plot. For instance, the working title for the original Avengers movie in 2012 was “Group Hug,” possibly alluding to the Avengers teaming up to defeat Loki’s army.
Along those same lines, the first Black Panther movie had a working title of “Motherland,” which clearly refers to the fact the film visits T’Challa’s homeland of Wakanda. Though the meaning behind these working titles may seem obvious after the fact, it is difficult to ascertain what they may mean beforehand. This is the case with Black Panther 2, since the “Summer Break” title could mean anything. It also may be a simple reference to when the movie is filming. However, with virtually nothing known yet about the plot of Black Panther 2, it seems likely the reveal of the working title will cause many to speculate about the sequel’s story.
