Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn shares a behind-the-scenes image of him with the cast and crew. The first installment of the Guardians franchise premiered in 2014 as the tenth film in the MCU, during phase two of Marvel’s initial Infinity Saga.

Guardians of the Galaxy was the MCU’s first ensemble hero film apart from the bigger umbrella Avengers team. Setting the MCU precedent for combining high-quality action with incredibly effective humor, Guardians of the Galaxy received both critical acclaim and financial success. The film is also known for its ‘80s nostalgia, most evidenced by its record-breaking soundtrack. The film stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel as the Guardians, along with many other well-known names.

James Gunn, who has directed both Guardians films and will direct the upcoming third installment, took to Twitter recently to share a behind the scenes photo of the cast. The photo, which Gunn suspects was taken at Twitter’s headquarters when the original film was released, shows Pratt, Saldana, Bautista, Gunn, and MCU mastermind Kevin Feige, sitting in front of a large group of people, most likely Twitter’s team. Although Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel are unfortunately missing, the group behind the stars looks thrilled to see the Guardians.

The third film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is set to be released in 2023, though there is no concrete release date set as of yet. It will be directed by Gunn, who was initially kicked off of the project due to a resurfacing of insensitive old tweets that joked about various topics including sexual assault and pedophilia. While Gunn was fired by Disney/Marvel, he joined the DCEU, directing the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel. Eventually, Gunn was reinstated as a part of the MCU and he came back busier than ever. In addition to Vol. 3, Gunn is slated to write and direct The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which takes place between Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 and will hit Disney+ in 2022. Gunn will also be working on I Am Groot, the Disney+ spinoff series about everyone’s favorite anthropomorphic tree that stole hearts after being turned into adorable baby form in Vol. 1. In addition to the onscreen work, Gunn will also be lending a hand to the future Guardians themed roller coaster that is currently in construction in Disney World.

Knowing the way the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has expanded, it is nice to see a small reminder of where it all started. Although audiences won’t be treated to much new Guardians content this year, there is a lot more in store. In the meantime, nostalgic moments such as these will keep the fandom going.
