Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh goof off on the set of Black Widow in a behind-the-scenes photo from the upcoming movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After sacrificing herself for the soul stone in Avengers: Endgame, Johansson’s titular character is returning for a swan song taking place between the events of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War. The prequel will see Natasha Romanoff team up with fellow super assassins/operatives Melina Vostokoff (Rachel Weisz), Yelena Belova (Pugh), and Red Guardian (David Harbour).
Director Cate Shortland’s Black Widow was supposed to help kick off the 2020 blockbuster season but was repeatedly delayed due to COVID-19. The film will now hit theaters and Disney+ Premier Access on July 9 and will be the fourth entry of Phase 4, following WandaVision, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier, and Loki. With as long as Black Widow has been finished, fans have gotten plenty of looks at Black Widow via various trailers, posters, and other marketing materials. While Disney has released official material for Black Widow, the cast of the movie have also occasionally given MCU fans a new look at their upcoming movie.
Pugh, whose character serves as Romanoff’s sister figure and protégé, recently shared a behind-the-scenes photo of her and Johansson on the set of Black Widow. The picture sees Pugh sitting on a motorbike behind Johansson, giving the cameraman a thumbs up. Check it out below:
Pugh is expected to be a breakout character in her MCU debut. The 25-year-old actress has already cultivated an impressive resume thanks to roles in Lady Macbeth, Fighting with My Family, Midsommar, and Little Women—the latter of which earned her an Oscar nomination in 2020. Pugh also just wrapped filming on Olivia Wilde’s highly-anticipated Don’t Worry Darling. As the MCU continues to expand across all platforms, it’s no surprise to see talent like Pugh joining its ranks, especially given the many reports revolving around a future adaptation of the Young Avengers and all the ways Marvel is introducing various proteges.
Audiences have waited a long time to see Johansson get a standalone adventure. Her character debuted over a decade ago in Iron Man 2, and Black Widow is set to reflect on the operative’s past, present, and future. With Johansson’s time as Black Widow coming to an end, it’s rumored that Pugh will be taking up the moniker or some variation of it. Pugh has already signed on to appear in the Disney+ series Hawkeye after Black Widow. Regardless of how Pugh’s character is received, it seems clear by the many fun BTS photos and interviews that she already has Johnasson’s seal of approval.
