The official Kate trailer shows a vengeful and violent Mary Elizabeth Winstead finally landing her own John Wick-esque role. After first appearing in the TV series Passions at age 14, Winstead later became known as a “scream queen” for her starring roles in the horror hits Final Destination 3 and Black Christmas. She eventually caught the attention of high-profile directors like Quentin Tarantino and Edgar Wright, respectively working with them on the exploitation slasher flick Death Proof and cult comic-book comedy Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Her in-demand talent despite largely sidestepping the A-list spotlight continues to benefit her genre choices to this very day, allowing her most recently to jump into action with a supporting turn in Birds of Prey.

Winstead continues her action streak with Kate, whose official trailer shows the actress channeling an action heroine in the same vindictive vein as Keanu Reeves in John Wick. The Netflix movie follows an assassin named Kate who blows an assignment in Tokyo after being poisoned. Upon learning the Yakuza organization is behind it, she only has 24 hours to exact revenge on her killers before the poison runs its course and kills her. The impressive supporting cast includes Woody Harrelson, Game of Thrones’ Michiel Huisman, and Tadanobu Asano from Thor: Ragnarok and Mortal Kombat. Check out the Kate trailer below:

With the first film being only seven years old, the John Wick franchise has quickly proved highly influential in Hollywood, as actors and studios try to replicate the successful formula. Bob Odenkirk recently had his shot with Nobody, which scored positive reviews and a decent box-office haul. Charlize Theron had hers before that with Atomic Blonde, an even bigger success that shared behind-the-scenes talent with John Wick. While it’s difficult to predict how successful Kate will be compared to those titles, audiences can find out for themselves when the movie releases on Netflix and in select theaters on September 10.
